Supplies
*cereal box (Why you ask, because it makes a cheap alternative to chipboard,
and works just as well since we are going to cover it anyways)
*envelopes--(I used 4--7 1/2" x 10 1/2")
*paper--(I used the Roxie Paper and then just rummaged through my stash)
*stickers, buttons, ribbon, and whatever else you need to use up
*Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge (you can make one without this cartridge,
but I used it to make a variety of tags and die cuts for the book-
-I don't know how many times I say this, but...this is the best cricut cartridge out there
and it is exclusive to "Close to my Heart". You can get yours through me if you live in Canada. )
*adhesive of your choice
*paper trimmer
I'm sure I will add a few items as I go along, but this is what I started with.
seal the envelopes
Cut 1/4" off of each end
so you end up with a 7 1/2" x 10" envelope that is open on both ends.
Fold your envelope in half
Your folded piece should be 7 1/2" x 5"
You can use a bone folder to get a nice crisp fold
Do this to all 4 envelopes--set aside
Grab your cereal box
and cut 2 pieces 7 3/4" x 5 1/4"
These will end up being the "covers" of your book
You want to make them slightly larger than your pages.
Now grab a sheet of paper to cover your album
Cut the paper into two 9" x 6" rectangles
(I used this size because I could get two"covers" out of 1 sheet of paper)
Adhere the paper to one side of the cereal box piece
Clip the corners as shown (these makes for a nice neat edge)
Wrap the excess paper around and adhere the edges to the other side as shown
Set the covers aside.
Now dig out all that "extra" paper you have,
Cardstock or patterned or some of both
and cut 8 pieces 5" x 7 1/2" --adhere these to the "outside" of the envelope pages
In part 3
I will show you how to bind the Smash Book and how to personalize it.
In the meantime,
you can get a jump start by cutting out
some (bout half a dozen or so) pieces of cardstock 4 1/2"x 7"
these will be "extra pages that will slip into the envelope pockets.
and cut 8 pieces 4 3/4" x 7 1/2" --adhere these to the "inside" of the envelope pages
I tried making all the pages 5 x 7 1/2, but found that if I did that I couldn't fold the envelopes nicely, hence I made the pieces a bit narrower for the inside

Terry,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great project! I love these types of books for gifts too. I put a link to your blog on mine. :) I enjoy seeing all your fun projects and love the pictures you post that explain it all so well. You have a lot of lucky customers.
